abc's matt gutman is in florida with the very latest on what would have caused all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, josh. it was likely a brush fire that threw up this blanket of smoke that caused what eye witnesses said was a nearly apocalyptic scene. vehicles mangled beyond recognition. when first responders got there, they had to listen to their moans and screams. so mangled was the smoldering mash of vehicles that this morning, investigators are still trying to determine the exact number of collisions involved. ten people were killed in this chain-reaction pileup apparently blanketed by smoke and fog on i-75. >> we had a mixture of smoke and fog that combined that made this visibility a factor and we had a series of crashes. >> reporter: it's believed six car, five semitrailers, even a motor home were involved. those collisions triggered an

inferno as skeletons of 18-wheelers and cars smoldered for hours. the smoke was so thick, first responsers couldn't see the wounded in the tangle of metal and bodies. >> the fog was so dense, you could hold up your hand and couldn't see it. it was like being in something you'd see in the movies. and you never really think it could happen. >> reporter: the florida highway patrol believes a 62-acre brush fire was the source of smog and smo smoke causing this 40-plus car pileup in new orleans in december. and the world's biggest pileup in dubai three years ago. 227 vehicles. so if you find yourself in dense smoke or fog, the highway patrol said first thing, crack the window. see if you can hear if there's an accident ahead of you. don't stay in any lanes. if you see an off-ramp, get off

the road as quickly as you can. >> thank you for that. meanwhile, republican presidential can indicate rick santorum as said his daughter made a miraculous turnaround after being hospitalized with pneumonia in both lungs. 3-year-old bella will stay in the hospital a few more days but she is improving. but santorum is expected back on the campaign trail today. meanwhile, three members of an afghan family living in canada face life in prison for a so-called honor killing that shocked that country. the father, mother and their young adult son were convicted of drowning the family's three teenage daughters and the father's first wife because they had defied strict rules on how to dress and used the internet to socialize. meanwhile, a dozen wall street are under arrest here this morning. they were marches for support of the protesters arrested over the weekend in oakland, california for breaking into that city hall. smashing glass and spray painting graffiti. finally, a moment you may have missed if you were watching that epic finish at the australian open yesterday.

after 5 hours and 53 minutes, novak djokovic got to go home. and so did rafa nadal. djokovic gave us a hulk hogan for the ages. off comes the shirt. but a few minutes later, take a look at what happens when changing for the awards ceremony that went on forever, i might add. he's going to toss his shirt to a young fan. but take a look at what happens when he does it. and he's going to do it -- oh, really. we're just going to do the awards ceremony in full. after a six-hour final, the awards ceremony itself lasts 25 minutes. and they made those two poor guys stand for virtually all of it. >> i thought it would never end. i kept coming back and forth saying it's still on? >> it's still on. just give them the hardware. >> you teased that shirt toss so well. >> as events warrant this

morning, george, we'll have it for you. >> all right. josh, thank you. in the meantime, to politics, "your voice your vote." the crucial florida primary is just 24 hours away. newt gingrich once had a sizeable lead, he's fallen behind in the polls while mitt romney surges right now. abc's jonathan karl is in orlando with the very latest for us. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the day before the primary here in florida, the race between mitt romney and newt gingrich has gotten nastier than ever and personal. mitt romney is as confident now as he's ever been. but he is taking no chances, hitting newt gingrich hard while he is down. in an interview with abc news, romney leveled some of the most personal attacks yet against gingrich. >> i think we're seeing unfortunately some of the qualities that got him into so much trouble while he was speaker of the house. the personal and character attacks are really unbecoming of a presidential candidate. >> reporter: romney is responding to gingrich's latest attacks on the campaign trail.

>> i would generally change washington. romney would manage the decay. >> reporter: and tv ads. >> if we can't say what mitt romney says about his own record, how can we trust him about anything? >> reporter: romney sees that as an attack on his personal integrity. and has responsed to gingrich's three marriages in a thinly veiled reference. >> my integrity is demonstrated to my life. been married to the same woman 42 years. >> reporter: but it was romney who started the negative attacks in florida. >> i want to congratulate speaker gingrich and my fellow republicans to a hard-fought campaign. >> reporter: since then, romney and supporters have buried gingrich in an avalanche of $13.8 million in attack ads, more than four time what gingrich and his allies have spent in florida. >> you look at the volume of ads, i have an opponent who has

money power and we need people power to offset money power. >> reporter: it seems to be working. romney up in the polls. and expecting to win. >> i'm hopeful i'll win here. and hopeful that i'll win in in that nevada and begin a trail of victories. >> but mitt romney has seen newt gingrich come back from the political dead twice already. that's why you can expect, no matter what happens in tomorrow's primary, romney will continue hammering away at gingrich until he's driven a stake through the heart of the gingrich campaign. >> thank you. and the former house speaker, newt gingrich joins us this morning. mr. speaker, thanks for coming on. what a difference a week makes. last monday, you were on this program surging coming out of south carolina. this week, you come in plunging in florida. is it too late for you to recover and win florida? >> well, the latest insider poll showed me closing the gap five points. you know, i think, romney's problem is that the big truth beats the big lie.

george soros said publicly in a reuters interview on video that he's perfectly happy with either obama or romney. they're the same people. the minor difference. he said gingrich is the real change. he said romney's fine. goldman sachs, largest funder of obama in 2008, largest funder of romney in 2012. the obama administration is waging a war against the catholic church as described by cardinal dolan, in a letter that was read in every catholic church in the country yesterday. guess what, mitt romney, with romney care, he specifically refused to exempt capitals. there's a lot of parallels between these two guys. romney care and obama care is essentially this. my point, george, is this, he can bury me for a very short amount of time with four or five or six times as much money. most raised in wall street from

guys who got bailouts from the government. in the long run, the republican party is not going to nominate a liberal who is proabortion, progun care. it ain't going to happen. >> mr. speak e-the front page shows that mitt romney is basically tied with president obama in the key swing states baugh president obama opens up a seven-point lead over rick santorum, a seven-point lead over ron paul and 14-pete lead over you. why should a republican on the fence look at you and say i may like newt gingrich i may even agree with him on many things, but he can't beat president obama? >> for the same reason in 1980 when ronald reagan was down 30 points against jimmy carter. conservatives looked and said, you know, i'd rather have a guy that can go into the debate with a clear, conservative position, than some guy who can't even distinguish between romney care and obama care. i think it's to be very hard for

mitt romney with funding from goldman sachs and the statement today from george soros, how is he going to explain that he's going to be better. i think the fact is, that the liberal -- we nominated a moderate in 1986, he got beaten badly. i know the establishment would love to nominate romney and they want to make him electable. so they can beat him in the fall. i think the record of '96 and 2008, you better have a conservative who can draw a really wide gap and romney care and obama care are about this far apart. >> mr. speaker, you made it clear again and again and again that you think mitt romney is a dishonest man. you think he's lied about you and your record in this campaign. will you pledge to endorse him if he defeats you, and can you about an effective campaigner for the ticket after what you said for him? >> george, he misled the entire country in the last debate on his own voting pattern. he misled the country on a whole

range of things. we just found out he had 23 foreign assets he didn't even list in disclosure forms. go down the list. i'm not talking about me. i'm saying the same thing that mike huckabee said. the same thing that john mccain said the last time. the same thing rudy giuliani said this fall. i think he has a real challenge. >> so will that keep you from endorsing him if he wins? >> no. i think re-electing obama is a disaster. but i -- i certainly endorse the republican nominee. but i think mitt romney will have a very, very hard time trying to differentiate himself. i think that's what the george soros message is this morning. >> mr. speaker, thank you for your time. >> thank you. >> we'll see what happens tomorrow in florida. now to the disturbing development in the missing case of that little baby in main, alya reynolds, police have found blood in her home. the same house she vanished from six weeks ago. abc's linsey davis is here with details on this.

good morning, linsey. >> good morning, robin. new details this morning but the mystery remains. overnight, krista reynolds confirmed to abc news what many have believed. the blood found was from indeed from her 1 1/2-year-old baby girl, ayla. abc news has learned that the blood was allegedly found here in the basement of this home in maine. >> my whole insides kind of felt like they crumbled. i cried. i cried a lot. >> reporter: alya was staying here with her father justin dipetro when he disappeared six weeks ago. reynolds said police described the blood as more than a small cut would produce. >> i was just told just over 24 hours now that blood was found and i don't want it to be real. >> reporter: over the weekend, ayla's mother and father appeared at this vigil. it was the first time they'd been seen together since their baby disappeared. reynolds said she was frustrated that dipetro wasn't answering her questions.

>> i was wanting to maybe lash out a little bit about it, but that wasn't going to get me anywhere. it was amazing to have him by my side to support alya as mom and dad. >> reporter: police have not fwhamed dedipietro a suspect or even a person of interest. at the vigil he refused to comment. >> i'm not going to answer any questions. i'm just going to show my support for the community for supporting ayla. >> reporter: reynolds says she's trying to remain optimistic, but this latest development is now weighing on her. >> a mother's worst might they're is what has happened to me. i really miss her. >> and reynolds tells us that she and state police have the same questions and she pointedly said that those questions are for dipetro. investigators are telling us, they believe the three adults inside the house the day she disappeared, they don't believe they're telling the whole story. let's get a check of weather.

big night for "the help." there's emma stone right there. we'll have all the fashion hits and misses. but let's turn to the murder mystery in a wealthy suburb, a mother of two found strangled in her car eight miles from home. now police say her husband is a person of interest. abc's dan harris has the latest. good morning, dan. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this is one of the safest and wealthiest neighborhoods in america. there hasn't been a murder here since 1982, but now there is his horrific murder mystery unfolding on this quiet suburban street, in fact this house behind me, involving two pillars of this community. a wealthy enclave. a successful mother of two found strangled in her mercedes. her husband going from a focus of sympathy -- >> i love you. >> reporter: -- to one of suspicion. >> he is a person of interest in our investigation. >> reporter: this mystery began

six days ago when jane bashara said she was heading home from work. when he got there, he said he found her work i.d. on the counter, and the tv on, but no sign of his wife. the next morning, she was found dead, strangled in her car in an alley in detroit. eight miles from the couple's elegant home in gross point, michigan. in the ensuing hours, bob, the president of the local rotary club received hugs at a candle light vigil. >> god bless you all. >> reporter: and gave interviews to the local media. >> it's just unthinkable this happened to her and she had to suffer. i'm just so upset about it. >> reporter: but then the police called him in for questioning. >> i'm doing what i can do to find out who did this to my wife. >> reporter: after a polygraph test and a four-hour search of his home, he stopped talking. now, his sister is rushing to his defense. >> everybody knows my brother and knows he's incapable of this act.

we're totally supporting him, family, community, friends. we totally support him. he's an innocent man. >> it simply doesn't make any sense. >> reporter: the neighbor patrick jones says bob bashara is being unfairly tried in the media. >> what makes the least amount of sense is what motive bob would have in something like this. >> reporter: they didn't have troubles in their marriage that you know of? >> we know of absolutely no troubles in the marriage. >> reporter: they have two grown children, both of whom have returned to the family home. family sources say they are standing by their bad. there will be a funeral for their mom coming up tomorrow. >> thank you. >> joining me is legal analyst dan abrams and nancy grace of "nancy grace" on hln. let me start with you, the manner in which she was killed. what does that tell you? >> strangulation, always, authorities are going to presume

at the outset, that's kind of a personal way to kill someone. immediately going to be looking at people that she knew. also, the fact that it appears that the body was moved. meaning the authorities don't think she was actually killed in the car, but her body then moved in the car and effectively staging the crime scene. that's another really important detail here as the authorities move forward. >> nancy, as is the norm in a case like this, investigators first look to the husband. and if you talk to family, if you talk to friends, they said there was just -- not this man. not this guy. and the motive, people are just baffled to see what a possible motive could be. >> well, you're right about that, regarding motive, robin, because in this case, we have no forced entry into the car. we have no sex attack. we have no robbery. she's found in the back seat of her 2004 mercedes, not leased. they were a very rich couple. and he is very friendly, very

gregarious. he's known as big bob, in the area where they live. the mayor of middlesex, what's going to be interesting that someone staged this as dan accurately pointed out, which means it is not random, a random killing, boom, you're dead. they leave your body there. here, they went to great lengths to hide her body in a bad area. i assume you all saw "eight mile" eminem, well, this is seven mile, which is assumed to be a bad area of town. so they take her 2004 mercedes, park it in an alley, i'm just wondering if there's any surveillance at all as to who went to such great lengths to leave her body there, purse and cell phone still there. she's clothed as dan pointed out ligature strangulation, with

manual strangulation, with her back injured in injury. many people believe she was actually kidnapped from the home which narrows the range of suspects. >> and that's why the cadaver dogs become important. that's why the computer search becomes important. remember, cadaver dogs, she was in the house, the dogs, it's clear she once lived there. but if you find a scent of a dead body, then you've got a different situation. also the searches of his computer, seems they were looking at his hard drives. >> that's putting it mildly, dan. in a different situation, i guess so. >> that a search of the hard drive, that becomes really, really important in the context of this investigation. >> gross point police have called him a person of interest. but detroit police say a suspect. is there any real difference there? >> there's no real difference there. the bottom line is if you call someone as a person of interest as opposed to a suspect, maybe they'll cooperate with the investigation. as a practical, legal matter, there is no difference. >> what's that, nancy? >> one of the cops slipped and said he's a suspect. then later, they came out with,

no, no, no, he's not. why? because once you're a target -- once you're a suspect, under our co constitution, constitutional privileges and rights then attach, that doesn't attach if you're not a suspect. >> that's not actually true. the bottom line is -- >> yeah, it is. >> -- with regard to a miranda warning. when it comes to a miranda warning, it's whether a person is in custody. >> really? because if you're a suspect, you've got to have your lawyer with you if you've got a lawyer. and that's another interesting point. >> no, actually -- i'm not crucefying this guy. he was in the middle of talking to cop, and somewhere in the middle of talking to the cop, he decided he needed a lawyer, and a lawyer showed up. >> that's fine. whether he chooses to have a lawyer or not have a lawyer -- >> hey, i'm all for lawyers. >> it doesn't change the fact whether you call him a person of interest or suspect doesn't change his constitutional -- >> really? then why did the cops retract that, dan? >> i'll tell you why.

>> because it doesn't mean anything personally. >> illinois' tell you why. two reasons. number one, it's a matter of p.r. meaning authorities don't want to be caught in a situation where they're calling someone something that it turns out the person isn't. and the second thing is, they're hoping that by calling someone a person of interest, which is a relatively new phrase these days, that they're hoping the person will cooperate more with the authorities by saying you're not a suspect. you're not a suspect. you're just a person of interest in the context of this investigation. >> there's another practical reason, dan, that any trial lawyer would know. >> it makes absolutely no difference, nancy, none. >> any trial lawyer would know that a problem calling someone a suspect is that when the real killer is caught, then you got to explain to a jury, well, yeah, i thought this guy did is it but we were wrong. now we're sure this guy did it. that doesn't go down very well with a jury. i'm telling you, that tell hurts to name somebody a suspect and retract it. rights do attach. >> nancy, dan, thank you very

it's never been more personal between newt gingrich and mitt romney. romney leading by 14 points in a poll out this morning but he is still on the attack. accusing gingrich as being a failed speaker of the house. this morning, on "good morning america," speaking with george, gingrich accused romney of lying about his records and his investments. also in florida, authorities are blaming fog and smoke for a nearby brush fire causing this massive highway pileup outside of gainesville. ten people were killed. nine others remain hospitalized. meanwhile, new questions this morning about investments made by taxpayer-owned freddie mac. npr reporting the mortgage giant has invested billions of dollars, stating that american homeowners won't be able to refinance their mortgages. and it raises concerns about a conflict of interest. also this morning, we're getting the clearest underwater view yet from that capsized cruise ship off the italian coast and now we're hearing it could take most of the year to remove the wreckage. here's abc's jeffrey kofman.

>> reporter: they are the first crystal clear underwater images of the calamity at sea. haunts pictures of a cruise ship abandoned midvoyage. there, mattresses on the seafloor, chairs even a woman's shoes and dishes precariously in a net. and after a hundred years of the sinking of the "titanic," there are images that look hauntingly familiar. here they make their way up and the grisly search for the 17 still missing. 17 bodies have been recovered. the ship continues to slip on its rocky perch, 200 feet above the seafloor, making recovery operations hazardous. we are trying to determine if the ship is bending under its own weight or slipping on the seabed said this researcher who is monitoring its movement. the priority right now, removing the 500,000 gallons of diesel fuel in the ship's tanks before it leaks out.

good, and they've come to the conclusion that this is in fact a mass hysteria, largely based on the fact that they got one of the girls having a seizure monitored by an eeg and they didn't see bona fide seizures. a mom said we've been pushed aside as a psychiatric problem. george, i spent most of my years working in a psychiatric hospital. one of the abilities is to nail down the medical causes of psychiatric conditions. you'd be stunned to know how often i found stuff. >> i take that point. but how can a spill more than 40 years ago create this today? and if that were the cause, how come you don't see it much more widespread in the community instead of isolated to these 15 mostly girls? >> okay, so remember, we're just at the leading edge of looking into this phenomenon right now.
